Words x Interview: Brenn & César

I feel like East Paris and Brooklyn have a lot of things in common, so it was a natural migration.

This is so good. Coming to Brooklyn at the end of this month is a new music and arts event called L A S T L I G H T curated by DJ act and L A S T L I G H T residents (and brothers) Brenn & Cesar.

They were born and raised in Paris, musicians since childhood, and regular fixtures on the City of Lights’ club and underground music scene prior to moving to Brooklyn. Check out the interview below and clear off your calendar for the event next Thursday x

Describe YOUR upcoming festival
Our collective, Lastlight, is formed of various individuals adding their expertise and art in order to bring to Brooklyn, and New York City in a greater extent, quality parties revolving around bright colors, whether it is in music or visual arts. We launch our first party in Williamsburg on The Roof @ Output, July 28th starting at 5pm. We’re proud to bring you this line-up we will be part of, alongside HD, Peter Fonda, Color War (live) and Onegreefield. This electronic music evening at this beautiful venue is a perfect introduction to the New York scene, and we are confident in the future that this blooming community will see clear into our intentions: Make people dance to good music in beautiful places.

Why Brooklyn?
What Brooklyn has to offer in terms of space, liberty, talent concentration and affordability has no competitor in this city. We were both born and raised in Paris and grew up in the Bastille neighborhood. We grew our following in East Paris from 2010 when we first started Brenn & César. I feel like East Paris and Brooklyn have a lot of things in common, so it was a natural migration.
How did YOU get started in the music scene?
We started back in Paris around 2010 when we first made this track called “Le Train de la Côte” which was very well received by our community back then. We then sent it to a handful of producers and artists we respect and some of them took the time to comment or repost it. This pushed us further into producing and playing gigs. We always had this hybrid DJ set/Live set that allow us to bring our own drums and loops into our acts.
What do YOU listen to at the moment?
We listen to a lot of house music from newer artists like Voyeur, Bodhi. Other than that, some of our classics are Rodriguez Jr, Robert Hood, Kollektiv Turmstrasse. At the moment we listen to a lot of hip-hop, especially french rap such as PNL, Booba, Jazzy Bazz. Probably the recent events in France push us closer to our national music scene.
Any 2016 Bucket List Goals you’ve crossed off? anything coming up?
Our main bucket list goal for 2016 was to be reunited in NYC together as Brenn moved here last summer and César just moved this past April. This first episode of Lastlight is definitely what we’re waiting for at the moment. On the production side, we’re finishing mixing and mastering for a couple remixes that we will give away as free downloads. Find us on Soundcloud for our latest mixes and productions. On another note, we still have a road trip down south to see some more parts of the US to do on our bucket list.

Favorite song of all time?
Brenn: as a DJ, probably Dusky – Mr Man. Overall, I can’t find one single song that I would put above all else.
César: Olderic – Alma (Christian Prommer Remix)
