You know what I love about this world of polished-to-perfection pop music? All the bands who ditch the high-priced recording studios, in-the-box recording process, endless editing, and autotune to wind up with a gritty, dirty, lo-fi tune with the one thing so many pop hits can never quite attain: character.

San Jose-by-way-of-Tacoma’s Funny Face House and their latest release, “Magnolia,” have plenty of that. Favoring a heavy bass, dusky low ends, layered harmonies, and a fuzzed out, punkish disdain for all things hi-fi, “Magnolia” rocks with the manic energy of the groups’ punk heroes while never abandoning their indie roots.
