Sounds: Sheer Calm // Copper Tongue

British DIY three-piece Sheer Calm have released their latest single, “Copper Tongue.” It’s a thrashy, dynamic, lo-fi lark, featuring a sweet bass and drum combination and some fiery guitar riffage to boot. The vocals are noisy and melodic, oozing evil and inspired sonic energy.

In the song’s chorus is a catchy vocal melody followed by my favorite aspect of the song. Three-quarters of the way through “Copper Tongue,” there is an exhilarating breakdown of the song’s hard-hitting beat. Almost like an old Floyd groove, the instruments play against one another in sweet elasticity. That’s what made the tune really stand out for me. It’s so tight.
