Ah Russia, what wonderfully weird music you have. With every listen, Liyolei‘s “Звери”
becomes more enchanting. I don’t know how to say the name of this song out loud but it fills me with the irresistible urge to catch the next flight to Kazan and dance the night away in a sleazy discotheque. The loop on the drum machine is so darned catchy and the synthesizer is decidedly Eastern European.
During the breakdown in the middle, a listener can’t help but clap along. There’s something about not understanding a single word that turns vocalist Liya Safina’s delightfully apathetic singing into a lyrical enigma. After her final growl and the last beat, I suddenly feel like smoking a cigarette.
This song is really different. I can’t say I’ve heard anything like it. It sounds like it should be listened to in a dark, crowded space full of fog with lasers shooting around all over the place.
Give it a listen.
