Sounds x Interview: Pink Mexico // Dump

Brooklyn-based band Pink Mexico play the type of slacker/grunge/surf rock you play while driving down the highway, windows down, on a sunny stoner morning. Robert Preston Collum of Pink Mexico sat down with us this week to talk about their upcoming US tour and recent album – titled Dump – released via Burger Records and Little Dickman Records:

So, let’s start with the most important question everyone wants to know…. is your favorite color pink?

No. I’d say a rusty reddish brown is probably my favorite color, although I typically wear all black all the time, so apparently I like black too, or I’m just bored.

You just released your latest LP, Dump, March 1st. What was the recording process like?

It was recorded in Brooklyn at Civil Defense, engineered/recorded/mixed by Jeremy Scott, mastered by Dan Gonzales. It was a self-produced effort.

What was the inspiration behind Dump?

It’s a dark psychotic psychedelic journey somewhere between the affliction of disappointment, and the addiction and destruction that come with it – the end.

Hot damn! What other projects are you involved in musically aside from Pink Mexico?

I play drums in my girlfriend’s band, Lola Pistola.

Love Lola Pistola. What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?

I just saw Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats, and that’s the best show I’ve seen in a while.

Nice! If you could open for any band (dead or alive) who would it be?

Alice in Chains or the Grohl man.

Are you from NYC originally?  If not, how’d you end up here?

I was born in Elizabeth, NJ, and moving to New York just happened. I never planned on it or anything. A friend asked me if I wanted to move to New York back in 2009, and I said yeah.

If you could have any other job in the world unrelated to music what would you choose?

I would like to aid in giving sea animals the opportunity to be part of space exploration.

That seems both cruel and kind.  If your band were a mall store, what would it be?

Spencer’s Gifts for sure.

Agreed. Thanks for chatting with us, Robert! Have a listen to Pink Mexico’s latest album, Dump, below, or see them live at any of their upcoming US tour dates:
