Sounds: Wojtek the bear // a long wait for bad news

Glasgow-based four-piece wojtek the bear have just released this new tune, “a long wait for bad news,” and it’s perfect for Sunday lazing around the house, with a cup of tea, and a good book.

This is the second of four singles released by wojtek the bear during 2019—all of which will be collected on a limited edition 10” vinyl, ‘old names for new shapes’, in November 2019.

Working again with acclaimed producer Jamie Savage at Chem19 Studios [The Twilight Sad, Miaoux Miaoux, The Phantom Band, RM Hubbert], wojtek the bear find themselves ruminating about our ever-increasingly connected and online world.

A melancholic guitar line brilliantly sets the somber atmosphere, atop which lead singer Tam Killean’s vocals ring out with a sorrowful, yet hopeful knowingness.

Lyrically, Killean explains his thought process:

“I’ve been thinking a lot recently about smartphones, technology, and social media. In particular how they’ve affected all of us, how we interact with each other, how we feel about ourselves, especially my own relationship with them. The song deals with how I’ve struggled to restrict myself from these things in an attempt to walk back from the insidious, awful effect it can have on our self-esteem and mental health.”

I’m really happy that we are now speaking up and noticing the difference between what is real (i.e. seen and experienced in face-to-face reality) versus what is not real or contrived (on social media). The closer we get to understanding and accepting this, the easier we might have of dealing with life on a regular basis, and dare I say it, finding happiness.
