Sounds x Premiere: Marquee Mayfield // “1979” (Smashing Pumpkins cover)

Very very rarely (like 20 times in five years) have I shared covers on this site. I love a good Nirvana cover band as much as the next post-adolescent teenager, but there’s something really powerful about sharing original tunes on the site that I enjoy just that much more.

However, every now and then, a cover comes across my desk that is so original and well-done, that I consider it to be worthy of sharing on the site. And, this doesn’t happen often.

Which brings me to Marquee Mayfield and this “1979” Smashing Pumpkins cover and video. Mayfield reimagines the tune as a pop-disco track befitting of the year it’s named after. That year, among many others, albums such as Michael Jackson’s Off The Wall, Prince’s Prince, Chic’s Risqué, and Donna Summers’ Bad Girls (oooh lawd this song) shook dancefloors and rocketed up the charts.

His version’s features funky guitar, dream-pop synths, and give this a heavy 1970s pop-disco sound. Listen to the tune/watch the new video below:
