Has anyone else had the week from hell this past week? Jay-sus! I’ve gotten a lot of really great submissions coming in that are 100% making things better, including this new tune from The Drives.

Made up of singer/guitarist, Andrew Levin, and producer/songwriter, Casey Chen, The Drives give us quintessential California surf-pop—which are equal parts surf rock and electro-pop. Both Andrew and Casey were born and raised in Orange County (Casey spent a good part of his childhood in Tokyo, which is just so cool it must be mentioned), and after spending some time out on the East Coast for college, they reunited in Los Angeles. This bi-coastal experience is important to mention because you can hear elements of both the West Coast and the East Coast in their music. With vocals adjacent to The Strokes, The Drives serve up a track that is sad, but also undeniably danceable.

This song is essentially about the death of a relationship. Lyrically, it’s dark and talks about the end of love and an unwillingness to accept when love is over. We used the word death a lot in this song because of how over dramatic and sometimes ridiculous it can sound when used in the context of love. Basically, the music is an attempt to celebrate the end of a romance in order to contrast with the bleakness of the lyrics.
