Sounds x Premiere: HNRY FLWR // WAITING ROOM

“Who will be there to take you in”

HNRY FLWR, “Waiting Room”

HNRY FLWR and I run in the same circles in New York City, but it wasn’t until SXSW last year that I had the pleasure of meeting him and seeing his project live. Clutching my chest for air, I stood captivated by the music and onstage presence. HNRY FLWR is something that you have to experience at least once in your life.

In 2014, HNRY FLWR began mixing different length sound waves using ancient synthesizers and a team of musical experts to create a type of music that is 100% earnest. Before this method of sound control, music was an insincere endeavor solely energized by a pure form of propulsion known as narcissism.

All of Brooklyn came together Wednesday night to celebrate HNRY FLWR’s first official release since 2017’s FLOWERAMA EP. Featuring a stacked bill (JW Francis, Big Bliss and Viktor Longo), the show—presented by We Color Live—gave everyone a taste of what was to come. Everyone stopped their busy New York lives to crowd into Sultan Room to celebrate the release of the “Waiting Room” single—which we have here for you now.

“I wrote the lyrics for this song while waiting for my close friend/bandmate in a pediatric cancer clinic waiting room, here in NYC. Between his battle for his life and an intense breakup I just had, I was feeling terrible. As I was waiting, a volunteer clown came in and started making all the kids laugh. It completely shook me — seeing these sick children finding joy helped me find my own joy amid the darkness. Breakups and cancer are not contagious, but love is. I wrote all the lyrics for this song right then in the fluorescent lights of the waiting room. My friend eventually made a full recovery, and we recorded this song together. It’s about how loving the people around you can completely flip your perspective, even when times seem unimaginably dark. I hope this song can do some good in that respect. I know it has for me.”

– David Van Witt (HNRY FLWR)

What I love about this track is how real it is—as singer David Van Witt croons about ‘sitting in the waiting room of the great beyond,’ he channels both Tom Petty vocals and his quintessential storytelling to tell us about feeling love and not giving up. It’s already the beginning of the year and we’ve dealt with enough death, heartbreak, and anxiety to feel as though we are halfway in the year. Then HNRY FLWR comes in with “Waiting Room” which can only be likened to a giant hug from a good friend. Whether you know him personally or are just hearing HNRY FLWR for the first time, this track lets you know he is there for you, as you’ve been there for him, and spreading love truly is the Brooklyn way.
