Skate: Pretty Poison // Canggu, Bali

Set among the rice patties in Canggu, Bali, off the side of the main intersection, sits Pretty Poison—completely unassuming with its concrete facade.

“Dogbowl open 4pm daily” is painted in white by the entrance, inviting local skateboarders in to enjoy a ride any sunny evening in its ‘backyard-inspired arts bar with a California-styled pool to shred.’

We figured the best place to launch the skate section of the magazine is Pretty Poison, where at any moment you are surrounded by some of the world’s coolest skaters, set beneath palm trees and enviable Balinese weather.

On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights, competitions and open mics are held (with a DJ spinning tunes later in the evenings). The interior decor is full of steel drums and pots, serving up a grunge appeal made up of American backyard nostalgia.

The popularity of the skate bar prompted the opening of a clothing store about ten minutes motorbike ride away, where designer Kijo Anjing, a local tattoo artist and Maree Suteja, owner of Pretty Poison, approve which ones will be sold.

Maree opened the bar in 2015—which was the first of its kind. The success is obvious with more skate bowls opening in Bali. With its tropical setting and plenty of sunshine, Pretty Poison is definitely a scene to experience.

If you’re lucky enough to be in Bali, stop by PP tomorrow to celebrate their 4th birthday party!
